April 2020 Vineyard Update

April 7th 2020

In the month of April, our vineyard team is awaiting the first growth stage in the vine cycle called "bud break." Bud break is a phenomenon where the accumulated temperature over a period of time signals the plant to essentially get out out bed. Stored energy in the roots and wood of the vine will push towards the buds located on the cordon. Those buds will then sprout shoots that will produce our grapes later down the road.
At this time it is crucial to be in the vineyard to control some of our more vigorous varietals. "De-budding" takes place where the team selects buds that are optimally positioned on the vine. It is important to work during this period of the vine cycle as is the least labor intensive.
