September Vineyard Update

September 7th 2019

September means harvest at the winery! The first grapes to come in off the vine will be the white varietals: Cayuga, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Riesling to name a few. Our team will get into the red varietals towards the end of the month. Field samples have been taken, and will continue to be taken throughout the month. The samples, along with the weather forecast, indicate when the grapes are ready to be harvested.
With the upcoming threat of rain from Hurricane Dorian, our first day of harvest was September 4th! Since we are truly at Mother Nature's mercy, we are luck if our team has more than 48 hours notice before being called in to pick. Row by row, we harvest every grape cluster by hand. This enables us to choose only the best grapes from the vine- in turn creating a much better quality wine for you to enjoy!
Once the grapes are picked, they are immediately processed on the crush pad. As you can imagine, harvest days are long and the work isn't easy- but the reward makes those tough September days worthwhile.
