Have you ever wondered how shoppers stay warm walking around those chilly outdoor Christmas Markets? The answer is Mulled Wine! Traditionally called Glühwein, this is a spiced red wine served warm. Think, adult hot cocoa. Serving mulled wine at a Holiday Party is one way to perfectly capture the winter season. Your friends and family will love grabbing a Christmas mug from your cabinet and sipping on this warm treat. We suggest using a table wine, such as our Cape May Red. The spices added in will impart a ton of great flavor into the wine, so you do not want to use a light wine because its delicate flavors will be overpowered.
Mulled Wine Grocery List: 1 Bottle Dry Red Table Wine (Cape May Red) 1/2 Orange 3/4 Cup Water 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 10 Whole Cloves 2 Cinnamon Sticks 3 Whole Star Anise Cheese Cloth Brandy for serving (optional)
Preparation:
-
Zest the orange in wide strips, set aside. Juice the orange and set the juice aside.
-
Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and boil until the sugar has completely dissolved. Reduce the heat and add the cloves, cinnamon, star anise, orange zest, and orange juice. Simmer about 1 minute.
-
Reduce the heat further and add the wine. Let simmer for at least 20 minutes or up to a few hours. Never let it boil! The trick is to keep it warm.
-
Strain and serve in mugs, adding a shot amaretto and garnishing with leftover orange peel or spices! Cheers!
